WALKWAY REPAIRS AND REPLACEMENT
The building manager was seeking cost-effective solutions for the repair or replacement of an external stairway that had become unusable due to concrete deterioration and reached out to Ralph Savy due to the firm’s reputation and previous experience working together.
After a visit to the site and a consultation which included a thorough inspection and structural assessment, Savy & Sons proposed a three-step process that would repair the stairs, and save the client the expense, and the downtime, that came with the replacement option.
The first step was to demo the deteriorating concrete, removing the remaining loose pieces. Next, the steps were prepped and had the noses reshaped with BASF repair mortar. Once that cured, the entire staircase was coated with BASF Master Seal 658, providing a uniform look and the properties of concrete, with better durability and a non-slip surface. Lastly, a BASF clear sealer was applied to protect the substrate from water, salt, and wear and tear, preventing deterioration, and allowing for an extended lifespan of the structure.
Repairing the stairs saved the client approximately $120,000 over replacement, and allowed the patio below the stairs to remain undisturbed. The whole project was completed in 10 days, versus well over a month should they have been replaced.
