MULTI-TANK WASTEWATER REHABILITATION & COATING RESTORATION
Savy & Sons was engaged to rehabilitate and restore multiple sanitary wastewater tanks at a private facility in Connecticut that had not undergone repair or coating upgrades since their original construction in the 1980s. Over time, the existing protective coatings had deteriorated, leaving the structures vulnerable to continued wear and degradation.
Having successfully partnered with the client on previous projects, Savy & Sons was selected based on proven performance, technical capabilities, and the ability to execute complex infrastructure rehabilitation work with minimal disruption.
PROBLEM
The existing coatings on the sanitary tanks had failed, exposing the underlying surfaces to ongoing deterioration. Given the age of the structures and lack of prior rehabilitation, the tanks required a comprehensive restoration approach to ensure long-term performance.
Additional project challenges included:
-
-
- The need to bypass the entire wastewater system prior to beginning work
- Coordinating with multiple vendors on-site
- Preparing aging tank surfaces to meet coating standards
- Maintaining a controlled work environment during blasting and coating operations
-
The client required a solution that would properly prepare the surfaces, apply a durable coating system, and extend the service life of the tanks.
SOLUTION
Savy & Sons performed comprehensive surface preparation and coating restoration of three wastewater tanks, combining waterblasting, abrasive media blasting, and high-performance coating application.
The scope of work included:
Surface Preparation
All three tanks were initially cleaned using 5,000 PSI waterblasting with oscillating nozzles to remove surface contaminants. This was followed by abrasive media blasting to achieve a NACE No. 4 / SSPC-SP-7 brush-off blast cleaning standard, ensuring proper surface conditions for coating adhesion.
Coating Application
Each tank was coated using a two-coat, high-performance epoxy system:
-
-
- First Coat: EpoxyMastic Aluminum II (7 mils WFT)
- Second Coat: Macropoxy 646 (10 mils WFT)
-
This coating system provides a durable, corrosion-resistant barrier designed to protect the tanks from harsh wastewater conditions.
Multi-Tank Coordination
The project included the rehabilitation of three tanks:
-
-
- Tank 1: 550 sq. ft.
- Tank 2: 550 sq. ft.
- Tank 3: 920 sq. ft.
-
Work was carefully phased to allow for proper containment, surface preparation, coating application, and curing for each structure.
PROJECT EXECUTION
The project was completed over a three-week period and required careful coordination of multiple phases, including full system bypass, containment setup, surface preparation, coating application, and final restoration.
Each tank underwent a controlled sequence of cleaning, blasting, coating, and curing, with containment systems installed to manage debris and maintain environmental control. All blasting debris was collected and properly disposed of, and a dust collection system was utilized to maintain a safe and controlled work environment.
Throughout the project, Savy & Sons coordinated closely with other on-site vendors to ensure efficient scheduling and safe operations.
RESULTS
The sanitary tank rehabilitation project was completed successfully, restoring the integrity and performance of all three structures after decades without repair.
Key outcomes included:
-
-
- Removal of failed coatings and proper preparation of all tank surfaces
- Application of a high-performance coating system to protect against long-term deterioration
- Improved durability and extended service life of the wastewater tanks
- Successful coordination of full system bypass and multi-vendor operations
- Completion of the project within the three-week schedule
-
CONCLUSION
This wastewater tank rehabilitation project highlights the importance of proper surface preparation and coating application in maintaining aging infrastructure. By restoring the protective coating system and addressing long-standing deterioration, Savy & Sons provided a solution that will support long-term performance and reliability.
The project also reflects the value of strong client relationships, with Savy & Sons selected based on prior successful work and the ability to deliver consistent, high-quality results.
