ELEVATOR PIT WATERPROOFING
When water began to leak into and pool at the bottom of an elevator pit at a Manchester Community College in Manchester, Connecticut, the facilities manager, Bob Smith, called in Savy & Sons to dry and waterproof the pit, protecting the hydraulic equipment and guaranteeing a “dry pit” as required by the state.
Having worked with Savy & Sons on other projects at another college, Bob was familiar with the team and scheduled the work to be completed over a school break so that the downtime would not impact the students’ use.
After an assessment of the elevator pit, the root cause of the water seepage was determined and Savy & Sons injected a polyurethane hydroactive grout to seal the areas around the perimeter of the pit where the water was infiltrating the structure. Additionally, the concrete joint that abuts the elevator shaft was acting as a conduit for the water to enter the pit. To rectify this, the team used polyurethane sealant to caulk the joint, creating a permanent barrier.
Before completing the three-day project, Savy & Sons verified the waterproofing repairs, dried and cleaned the pit, and inspected the equipment for any water-related damage. The elevator was then returned to normal service just in time for the beginning of the school year.
